Leaving Rome, our journey northward takes us through the scenic Umbrian Hills to Orvieto. Perched on a volcanic rock, this town boasts a renowned cathedral with a history dating back to 1004. Orvieto's roots extend even further, with Etruscan-era cave tunnels believed to have sheltered early Christians. We visit Bolsena next, home to the Cathedral housing the Miracle of the Eucharist. After celebrating Mass, we continue to Assisi, the hometown of St. Francis and St. Clare, for check-in, dinner, and a peaceful night's rest.
Day 5 - Assisi St Francis
Immerse yourself in the timeless aura of St. Francis's birthplace, where the essence of the early 13th century still lingers. Your journey begins at the St. Francis Basilica, where you'll pay homage at his tomb and marvel at frescoes depicting his life and treasured possessions. Venture to the Santuario Della Spogliazione, where Blessed Carlo Acutis rests, the first millennial declared Blessed, renowned for his devotion to the Eucharist.
Embark on a captivating walking tour through Assisi's charming streets, tracing the footsteps of St. Francis and concluding at the Church honoring St. Clare, epitome of humility and devotion. Enjoy some leisure time for personal reflection, shopping, or a delightful lunch.
Afterward, board the bus to the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, the spiritual heart of St. Francis's life. Explore the "Porziuncola," where he founded the Franciscan Order, and the "Capella del Transito," his final resting place. Day 6 - Assisi - Gubbio - La Verna
Following breakfast, we embark on a scenic drive through the picturesque Umbrian mountains to reach Gubbio, a medieval gem. Here, we'll visit St. Francis Church, where Mass will be celebrated. Afterward, we'll explore the town, renowned for its dramatic hillside setting and the legend of St. Francis taming a fierce wolf.
After some free time for lunch, our journey continues to La Verna, a significant pilgrimage site where St. Francis received the stigmata in 1224. You'll have the opportunity to pray in the Chapel of the Stigmata, the Basilica, and the Chapel of Saint Mary of the Angels, as well as admire the exquisite artworks by Andrea della Robbia.
We'll then return to Assisi for dinner, marking the end of our pilgrimage and our final overnight stay.
Day 7 - San Giovanni Rotondo - Monte Sant' Angelo
Today, our focus turns to St. Pio of Pietrelcina (1916-1968), a remarkable figure who resided here for half a century. Day 8 - San Giovanni Rotondo – Pietrelcina – Montecassino – Rome
Today marks the beginning of our journey with a visit to Pietrelcina, the birthplace of Padre Pio. Here, we'll delve into the "Houses of Padre Pio," gaining insight into the early life of this revered saint.
Our next stop takes us to the renowned Abbey of Montecassino, a site of immense historical and spiritual significance, where the esteemed figures of Sts. Benedict and Scholastica find their rest.
